Brief historical background
Moredun House stood opposite 471 Gilmerton Road. The house and estate were formerly called Guttaries and this was later changed to Goodtrees meaning "ditches".
In the 18th Century, Baron Moncrieffe, one of the owners, changed the name to Moredun, the name of a hill on his Moncrieffe Estate at Perth. The name Moncrieffe itself is an old Celtic name meaning "Hill of the Tree". "Moredun Park" streets were laid out on the parkland of the former estate. The names Moredun and Moredunvale features in many of the local street names.
Moredun Community Wing (see photo) was demolished in 2004 and Goodtrees Neighbourhood Centre was built on the site.
The new centre was one of the three new community education centres opened as part of the Smart Schools Initiative which aimed to renew and improve education buildings across the city (the other centres were Leith and Carrickvale).
